Poovar Beach

• Poovar is actually a beach and backwater resort rolled into one. The hotels are located on the banks of a beautiful estuary. You have to hop across by boat to reach the beach that is on a spit of land on the opposite side. Very much the place to go for a quiet ‘get away from it all holiday’ in idyllic tropical surroundings.

• Chowara is the quiet alternative to Kovalam’s popular beaches. It lies about 5 miles to the south with long, wide sandy beaches lined with coconut palms. There is a fishing village near the beach with ample opportunities to watch fisherfolk casting their nets.

• Kovalam offers some of the best sea bathing beaches in India, especially during the Winter Season. The resort of Kovalam spreads over 3 crescent shaped beaches that are separated by rocky headlands.

• The largest and best known is Lighthouse Beach which also has the shallowest water. It is possible to go in to the sea for up to 100m at waist height in certain places. Next is Hawah Beach in the middle and Samudra Beach which has a fishing village.

• Behind the beaches and on the headlands are tiny roads and alleyways with shops, markets and local eateries.

• Some beaches can get crowded during weekends. Kovalam also attracts a large number of charter-package tourists during the Winter Season.

Kovalam - Excursions And Things To Do

• Take a day trip to Kanya Kumari, the southernmost tip of the Indian sub-continent, visiting Padmanathapuram Palace, the seat of the old Travancore rulers, on the way.

• Go on an overnight Rice Boat cruise on the vast Ashtamudi Lake near Kollam or the much more scenic waterways further north that form the Alleppey Backwaters.

• Experience Kerala’s famous Kathakali Dance with an evening performance at Trivandrum or watch the exciting ancient warrior martial arts of Kerala known as Kalari where swords and daggers are used for combat to the sound of rhythmic drums.

• Kerala is home to the ancient Indian healing art of Ayurveda. You can go for a simple rejuvenating massage or a longer course of more intensive treatments.
